As announced on November 29, 2022, Michelaine Lahaie, Chairperson of the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for RCMP (CRCC), initiated a complaint regarding the arrest and detention of an Alberta youth, on October 2, 2022, by RCMP members.
This matter has progressed as follows:
- The RCMP conducted an investigation into the Chairperson's complaint, as per the terms of reference on the CRCC's website.
- On May 31, 2024, the RCMP provided a report regarding its investigation into the Chairperson's complaint. This report outlined measures the RCMP has taken in response to the issues engaged by the complaint.
- On June 5, 2024, the Chairperson confirmed that the CRCC would conduct a review of her complaint and the RCMP's report, and requested all materials that the RCMP gathered and prepared during its investigation.
- On June 20, 2024, the CRCC launched a further investigation into the Chairperson's complaint to gather more information concerning the issues raised in the investigation.
Upon completion of its further investigation, the CRCC will issue a report to the RCMP containing its findings and any recommendations it sees fit. Following the RCMP's response to this report, the CRCC will publicly issue its final report into the matter.
