Commission launches complaint into fatal shooting of Greg Matters in Prince George, B.C.

Mr. Ian McPhail, Interim Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP (Commission), has initiated a complaint and public interest investigation into the conduct of RCMP members who responded to a situation involving Mr. Gregory Matters on September 9 and 10, 2012, in Prince George, British Columbia, which tragically resulted in Mr. Matters' death in following a police-involved shooting.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia conducted an investigation into the actions of the RCMP members involved in the incident, and determined that no criminal offence was committed.

Independent investigative bodies, such as the IIO, conduct investigations into officer-related incidents of death or serious harm in order to determine whether or not an officer may have committed a criminal offence. The Commission's role is to examine the conduct of RCMP members in the execution of their duties against applicable training, policies, procedures, guidelines and statutory requirements and where applicable, make remedial recommendations.

"By examining the conduct of RCMP members involved in this serious incident, the Commission provides an added level of scrutiny to ensure such conduct is reasonable and policies and procedures are adequate," said Richard Evans, the Commission's Senior Director of Operations.
